Exterior shot of Chance Glass in Smethwick. Bob Hall piece to camera standing in front of the glass furnace. He talks about how the men used to work in these harsh conditions but the firm has now introduced a Unimate robot provided by parent company Pilkington. We see the machine in action lifting the glass from the furnace. Next at Motor Panels in Coventry we see the manufacture of steel lorry cabs. Paint spraying used to be carried out by the workers until David Fullerton had an allergy from the work and the TGWU walked out. Interview with a manager from the firm about how the solved the health problem by introducing a robot. We then see the robot sprayer in use.
We then visit Healey Mouldings in Birmingham which makes plastic kettle handles. Bob Hall piece to camera on the production line with an operator who has to stand and wait whilst the plastic cures. Hall talks about the boredom of the job and how the worker will soon be replaced by a robot. Hall next reports from Metal Castings in Worcester where Unimate robots are used to handle castings in the foundry. The next section is audio only (because the pictures were supplied by British Leyland and returned to them) and describes the use of robots on the Mini Metro production line at Longbridge. Finally there are mute shots of an experimental robotic sheep shearing device.
