Description

The first section of the film is b/w and begins with a shot of the event programme followed by shots of the Eastern Road sports ground at Bournbrook, Selly Oak being prepared for the day. We then see a series of races (predominantly for men) run over various distances including a relay. Women are seen taking part in an egg and spoon race, although this is filmed from a distance. Some of the men wear vests and shorts and others are in everyday trousers, shirts and braces. Some of the winners pose for the camera after the races. We also see long jump, walking event and high jump.

We switch to colour for further similar shots plus more views of the crowd including spectators smoking and eating ice creams. Several children are seen with ice creams. In the colour section there are more shots of the women’s races. A man with a cine camera and tripod is also seen (presumably the film-maker for the b/w section). A group of women are seen holding their babies and then another group of women with toddlers (may be part of a baby show although no judging is seen).

Returning to b/w there are further races including three legged (men and women paired) and an obstacle race in which the competitors have to hurl themselves through a hanging tyre. We end with brief shots in colour of a table of trophies and a final shot in b/w again of the programme.
