Description

Descriptive intertitles throughout. We open with shots showing the safe way in which the steeplejacks fix ladders to brick chimneys by hammering into the mortar and assembling their ladders in sections. They are shown climbing up the side of the still-smoking factory chimneys. Next we see the men making repairs to brickwork and repointing. The next section shows the manufacture of wrought iron chimney bands in a foundry. We then see the rebuilding of a steel chimney with the men on scaffolding. The next section shows the building of a brick chimney at Ketton Cement Works in Rutland followed by views of the construction of a brick chimney at Stanton Ironworks at Stanton by Dale in Derbyshire. The Stanton section includes shots of the men mixing their mortar and hoisting the bricks to where the men are working on a platform. Cyril Ball also uses the hoist to inspect their work. The final section shows (in colour) the demolition of a brick industrial chimney close to Coventry Road at Bulwell in Nottingham (a sign for Fyson Brothers, Printers in the background indicated the location).
