Description

Opening section shows Lincoln Cathedral including (quite dark) views inside the building highlighting the stained glass and establishing shots of the exterior as well as shots detailing the stonework and carving. We then see traffic passing through Newport Arch in Lincoln followed by a view of the Stonebow with traffic passing. This is followed by a view of Brayford Pool with the cathedral visible in the distance. Next we see the exterior of the Jew's House and Steep Hill. We then see the outside of the Ruston and Hornsby factory (complete with advertising hoarding for Ruston oil engines). Inside the factory we see stages in the manufacture of diesel engines including a very large crankshaft being machined and checked for tolerances. There are shots of materials being tested to destruction as well as main bearings being prepared and engines assembled. The next section shows a view of a narrow gauge diesel emerging from a mine followed by standard gauge railway diesel shunters in use (including Ruston diesels at Clyde Alloy Steel Company in Motherwell). This is followed by a Ruston stationary diesel engines in use at a water pumping station and a Ruston Bucyrus 19-RB excavator being used in a quarry to load lorries with stone. We then see a ship being loaded with ice at the East Anglian Ice Company followed by the demonstration of a diesel cement mixer in a yard. Next there is a large chemical works which uses a Ruston gas turbine and the final section shows an Aveling Barford diesel road roller being used on a road next to North Common in Lincoln.
