Description

Andy Craig begins the programme by linking to the illusionist Uri Geller who is tonight’s special guest. Craig then talks to mind reader Stephen Magus whom on the final edition of Central Choice (the version of Central Weekend that ran through the general election campaign) wrote down his prediction of the result (including exact numbers of seats) in an envelope that was sealed by Sue Jay. Security guards return with the envelope which is opened and his prediction proves to be exactly correct. Craig then introduces a clip of Uri Geller bending spoons on the David Dimbleby show in 1973 (BBC) before introducing him. Geller’s first trick is to make a compass move.

Sue Jay then takes the main studio debate which discusses euthanasia or the right to die. She talks to Derek Humphrey of the Hemlock Society who now lives in the USA. Twelve years ago whilst living in England he helped his wife, who was terminally ill, to die. He was told at the time that he could get fourteen years for assisting a suicide. Sue then talks to Dr Peter Kay who is the director of a hospice in Northampton who is against the procedure and to the Dutch GP Dr Herbert Cohen who talks about the situation in Holland where assisted suicide is legal. There are contributions from the audience including Pippa Short who has cared for her mother and Margery Caygill who speaks in favour of the process.

The remainder of the programme is given over to Andy Craig talking to Uri Geller. Geller uses telepathy to predict a drawing that Craig has in his pocket, restarts a broken watch (and a Walkman hidden in the studio). He also manages to find a single ring hidden in a number of identical cups and talks on the phone to Jean from Hereford whose watch has re-started during the programme.
