Description

It was announced yesterday that Raleigh was going to close the Triumph Road plant and move production abroad. It had been hoped that the firm which has been producing bikes in the city for over a hundred years would move to a new site in Bulwell, but it is now known that the idea was blocked by allotment owners on environmental grounds.

Interview with Bulwell allotment holder, John Collins who describes it as an old traditional company which he would have liked to see stay in Nottingham. Interview with Brian Parbutt of Nottingham City Council who says that they want to keep the distribution side in Nottingham and wants to help the workers and find a use for the site at Bulwell. Interview with Graham Allen MP Nottingham North (Lab) who says that anywhere you go in the world if people talk about Nottingham they talk about Robin Hood and Raleigh bikes.

B/w archive shots of Raleigh production in the 1940s (Thus We Served). Library shots of production at the Triumph Road site. Views of the allotments in Bulwell.
