Mrs Wigley, who was a cancer patient, was given the drug 5FU as part of a survey but the drug is known to have the side effect of killing healthy blood cells. Doug Carnegie spoke to Doctor Michael Thomas, the chairman of the BMA Central Ethical Committee and to one of Mrs Wrigley’s daughters who said that they would not have allowed the drug to be administered if they had been aware of its side effects.
