Programme presented by Jon Lander. The first film report looks at the problem of alcohol abuse in Birmingham and features Dr Hugh Norris, the Director of Aquarius, a publicly funded organisation that treats alcoholics in the city. We also see views of the American owned private Manor Clinic at Edgbaston that provides a similar service for a fee. We see recovering alcoholics attending group therapy sessions, library pictures of pub interiors and a pint of beer being pulled. There are interviews with hospital director, Adrian Lee and Dr Norman Imlah of All Saints Hospital in Birmingham. Back in the studio Reg Harcourt talks to the Derby North Conservative MP Greg Knight, who has campaigned for longer pub hours, about problem drinking.
Next Rob Whitehouse rounds up the latest news including the Midlands nominations for the Shadow Cabinet (who are illustrated with stills). There are also short studio interviews with the Conservative MP for the Wrekin, Warren Hawksley about laws which allow children into pubs and also with the Conservative MP for Mid Worcestershire, Eric Forth who is planning to take part in a debate in Birmingham against the concept of a right to work.
Next in a regular series in which MPs report on a personal issue, the Labour MP for Bassetlaw, Joe Ashton visits his home city of Sheffield which has been badly hit by the recession. Ashton proposes using the unemployed to revive former industrial areas like Sheffield. We see exterior shots of a Baptist church and Mosque as well as views of industrial dereliction and closed factories. There is a section of archive film showing the Sheffield steel industry. Ashton reports to camera and interviews the former Lord Mayor, Harold Lambert, environmental planning officer, Narendra Bajaria and talks to unemployed men out fishing along a canal in the city.
