Programme presented by Jon Lander. The Trade Union Act of 1984 is forcing all unions to hold ballots to decide if members want them to fund political parties. Most unions support Labour and the TUC want the political levy to continue. We see members of the Sogat print union with their ballot result this week. Rob Whitehouse then reports on the issue including clips from a TUC political levy campaign video fronted by the Bassetlaw Labour MP Joe Ashton and a clip of the Labour party conference. Whitehouse interviews: Bill Keys who is chairman of the TUC campaign; and Alan Sapper of the TV technicians union. We then see an electricians union meeting taking place in Birmingham and a trade union march. Next we meet former British Leyland worker Joy Bushby who is the national chair of the Conservative Trade Unionists. She is seen walking outside the Austin Rover works at Longbridge and in an interview claims that many union members contribute without being aware that they are supporting the Labour party. This is followed by vox pops with workers leaving Longbridge. Back in the studio Reg Harcourt chairs a debate on the issue between the Conservative MP for Amber Valley, Phillip Oppenheim; the Labour MP for West Bromwich West, Betty Boothroyd; and Ian Rigglesworth of the SDP. Next in a regular series in which MPs report on an issue of their choosing the Labour MP for Leicester West, Greville Janner looks at the issue of shop-lifting and the many older people who have been accused of stealing when they have just been forgetful. Janner wants only the police to prosecute shop-lifters and not the shops themselves. He reports from a shopping precinct at Beaumont Leys. We then see library pictures from ATV Today relating to the October 1980 arrest of Lady Isobel Barnett who was found guilty of shop lifting and subsequently committed suicide. We see Lady Barnett entering court, an interview after the verdict and the exterior of the Grange Dairy where the crime took place. Interview with Detective Chief Inspector Ian Leacy; vox pops with customers outside Tesco in Beaumont Leys about forgetting to pay for things; and finally an interview with Ruby Williams who was wrongly accused of shoplifting.
