Programme presented by Jon Lander who begins by discussing the Labour reselection process in which all MPs have to seek the approval of their local committees. In the studio Reg Harcourt talks to Dr Patrick Dunleavy of the London School of Economics about the process and in particular the Walsall South MP Bruce George who is at risk of not being selected. Next on film Mark Astaire reports about the right-wing Libertarian Alliance group who have links to the Conservative party but propose complete freedoms including the right to take drugs and take part in paedophilia. Interview with Carl Ward who is a councillor in Coventry and the Vice Chairman of the Young Conservatives. He describes their politics as obnoxious. We then see the exterior of the Alternative Bookshop in Covent Garden where the Libertarian Alliance are based and there is an interview with spokesman Brian Micklethwait. We also see a still of West Midlands L.A. organiser Ian Geldard and there is an interview with Marc-Henri Glendenning, Chairman of the Federation of Conservative Students. Next on film Rob Whitehouse reports from a Skills Centre in Redditch following news that the Manpower Services Commission is proposing to close a third of the centres. In Redditch we see views of the Kingfisher shopping centre and the local job centre as well as views of the skills centre which opened in 1982. There are interviews with student George Lockyer; Councillor John Stone, Labour deputy leader of Redditch Town Council; Alan Mackrael, chair of Redditch Chamber of Industry & Commerce and Eric Forth, the Conservative MP for Mid Worcestershire. The final film report is part of a series in which Midlands MPs report on a subject of their choosing. This week John Golding, the Labour MP for Newcastle under Lyme, introduces a critical report about open cast mining. We see views of an open cast colliery in North Staffordshire situated close to housing. There are also views of a proposed new site in the Oakdale Valley and views of Holditch Colliery at Chesterton. Golding argues that open cast mining is not needed and it is forcing local deep pits to close. There are interviews with Councillor Bill Hughes and George Cairns, Midlands area executive of the NUM and we also meet amateur naturalist George Harriman and his son looking for wildlife in the Oakdale Valley. Golding also reports to camera from a roundabout at Chesterton about the increase in lorry traffic that open cast mining will cause.
