Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. In the studio Reg Harcourt interviews the Leader of the Labour Party, Neil Kinnock about the on-going miners' strike and in particular recent comments by the Prime Minister that the striking miners were 'the enemy within'. Next on film Rob Whitehouse reports from Worcestershire on the Martley Alliance, which is the first formal merger between the SDP and Liberal parties which has taken place on Malvern Hills District Council. We see views of the Malvern Hills, the ruined Witley Court and the council offices on Church Street in Great Malvern. There are interviews with Keith Butler of the local SDP party and Charlie Birchley of the Liberals. In Westminster there is an interview with Liberal MP David Alton who is against a full merger of the two parties. Next on film Reg Harcourt profiles the mother and son Conservative MPs Sally and Phillip Oppenheim. Sally Oppenheim represents Gloucester and her son Phillip won the Amber Valley seat in 1983 becoming the youngest Tory MP. We see Phillip Oppenheim visiting a safety glass factory in Derbyshire, opening the Park Hall Craft Centre at Denby and attending a tea party with his mother and supporters in the Amber Valley constituency. The pair are interviewed about their politics and we also see an extract from a library interview with Phillip from ATV Today in August 1972.
