Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. In the first film item Rob Whitehouse reports from the police conference at Scarborough. We see shots of Scarborough sea front and views inside the conference hall. The major issue of the moment is policing of the miners strike although little actual conference time has been given over to the issue. Whitehouse interviews Brian Hilliard of Police Review; Les Curtis, chairman of the Police Federation; Stewart Argyle of Nottinghamshire Police Federation; Colin Pittaway of the West Midlands Police Federation; and the Home Secretary Leon Brittan. We also see Brittan speaking to the conference and a brief library shot of police with striking miners. Next Reg Harcourt looks ahead to the forthcoming European Elections. In the studio he describes the make-up of the different Midlands constituencies. On film Jon Lander spotlights the diverse Derbyshire seat. We see shots of Derby city centre including the Market Place and City Council and there are interviews with the three candidates: Tom Spencer (Conservative) who has held the seat since 1979; Judy Elles (Alliance); and Geoff Hoon (Labour). We also see a brief view of Hucknall in Nottinghamshire which is within Ashfield and also falls into the large constituency; Elles and Spencer campaigning in rural Derbyshire; and Hoon talking to people in Derby city centre. We then see extracts from several European election campaign videos (most in poor quality and captioned on screen as being from vhs).
