Programme presented by Tony Francis. Today in Sheffield the leaders of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) voted to continue the national miners strike without holding a ballot of members. In a film report Rob Whitehouse visits Sheffield where there was a confrontation between police and miners outside the NUM headquarters. We see the NUM leader Arthur Scargill outside the building addressing the crowd with a loud hailer. He also spoke to Brian Stewart, a reporter from Canadian television as the strike has now become international news. Some Midlands miners are working through the strike particularly those in Nottinghamshire. The Nottinghamshire NUM leader Ray Chadburn was roughly jostled as he left today's meeting. We see Whitehouse trying to interview Chadburn amidst the scuffle.
Back in the studio Tony Francis interviews Frank Haynes MP for Ashfield (Labour) and Peter Rost MP for Erewash (Conservative) about today's developments and the intimidation of Nottinghamshire miners. Next at Dordon Miners Welfare in North Warwickshire Rob Whitehouse talks to a group of miners from Birch Coppice colliery about the strike. Finally in the studio Tony Francis interviews the political analyst Steve Bristow about a Central Lobby opinion poll before the forthcoming Stafford by-election.
