Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. In a film report Rob Whitehouse visits South Derbyshire where many miners are defying the strike order from union leader Arthur Scargill and working on. Whitehouse visits Rawdon Colliery (which is at Moira and therefore just over the border into Leicestershire) and Cadley Hill Colliery where he interviews a small group of Welsh flying pickets that have managed to evade the police. He also speaks to Ken Toon, Branch Secretary of the South Derbyshire NUM and a group of miners wives from Cadley Hill about the strike.

Back in the studio Francis then interviews Edwina Currie MP for South Derbyshire (Conservative) and Mark Fisher MP for Stoke Central (Labour) about the dispute.

Next on film Rob Whitehouse investigates the health and fitness of MPs. A group of MPs and journalists have recently decided to hold a weight loss competition. He speaks to Don Concannon MP for Mansfield (Labour) who is seen jogging in London. We see views of the House of Commons kitchens and the chef is interviewed. Whitehouse also talks to Charles Irving MP for Cheltenham (Conservative), Bruce George MP for Walsall South (Labour) and Cyril Smith MP for Rochdale (Liberal) and accompanies Bruce George and the House of Commons doctor Morris Miller to a restaurant where they sample a low-fat menu.
