Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. In the studio Tony Francis interviews Gerald Howarth MP for Cannock and Burntwood (Conservative). It has been alleged that Howarth is a member of the extreme right wing 'Tory Action' group that uses racist language in its literature. Howarth denies these claims as well as goose-stepping on a recent visit to Berlin. In a film item Reg Harcourt interviews the Secretary of State for Industry, Norman Tebbit who has recently finalised a deal that will bring the Japanese car manufacturer Nissan to Britain. There are concerns however that the new factory will be a threat to British firms and UK component manufactures will be under cut by imported goods. Next in a studio item Jon Lander interviews Dennis Skinner MP for Bolsover (Labour) about a campaign to reduce work place accidents. Finally on film Rob Whitehouse visits Calke Abbey in Derbyshire. When the estate's owner, Charles Harpur-Crewe, died in 1981 he left death duties of £12 million and combined with a huge amount of money which will be required to restore the building has put the whole estate under threat. There are interviews with owner Henry Harpur-Crewe; Warren Davies of the National Trust; and family retainer Ben Hyde. The government is currently being lobbied for money to save the building and its contents, which are unchanged since the 19th century, for the nation. This item includes a tour of the building in its unrestored state.
