Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. The first report looks at a recent rise in burglaries. On film Rob Whitehouse interviews Celia Darling who was recently burgled; and applied psychologist Guy Cumberbatch of Aston University who has made a study of the trauma experienced by burglary victims. We then see views of Bedworth in Warwickshire including tracking shots past houses. The town has seen a large increase in burglaries this year. Whitehouse talks to the Chief Constable of Warwickshire, Peter Joslin who blames the rise on lighter sentences for offenders. Back in the studio Reg Harcourt chairs a debate on the issue between Renee Short, Labour MP for Wolverhampton North East, and Tony Marlow, Conservative MP for Northampton North. The next film report looks at Telford new town. Len Tingle reports about next month's planned opening of the M54 motorway which will link the town with the M6 and West Midlands. We see traffic including heavy lorries on the A5 and aerial views of the empty M54. The motorway is around 15 years late after a long drawn out planning process held up by environmental concerns. It is hoped that the improved transport links will help the town which is an unemployment black spot. Tingle interviews Lord Northfield, Chairman of the local development corporation; Peter Kinnear of Shropshire CBI; Warren Hawksley, Conservative MP for the Wrekin; and John Hibbs, Head of Transport Studies at Birmingham Polytechnic. We then see aerial views of Ironbridge gorge and factories in Telford followed by shots inside the Cinzano bottling plant in the town. Tingle then talks to Brian Zermani, the Managing Director of Telford Bottling Company about the hopes for the new road. The final report is a profile of the Birmingham born trade unionist Lil Stephens who works as a school meals supervisor in the city and has recently been appointed to the General Council of the TUC. There are vox pops with Lil's kitchen colleagues and views of school dinners being served at Jaffray School in Erdington with Lil working behind the counter. She is interviewed in her office about her work as President of NUPE. We also see children in the playground at Jaffray School.
