Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. In February 1983 it became law to wear seat belts in the front seats of cars. In a film report Rob Whitehouse meets Veronica Moss from Wythal whose life was saved by wearing a belt in a crash three months ago at Hollywood in Birmingham. We see stills of her crashed car and there is an interview with an unnamed consultant surgeon about the drop in facial injuries since the legislation. The Salary Review Body has recommended a 31% rise in MPs pay, a figure which the Government is against as it tries to keep public expenditure down. In the Westminster studio Jon Lander talks to Francis Maude MP (Conservative, Warwickshire North) about the issue. The next item is about the future of the House of Lords. Labour want to abolish the system and in a film report the former Cannock Labour MP Gwilym Roberts gives his personal view which is against hereditary peers. Back in the studio there is an interview with Baroness Fisher of Rednal (the former Labour MP for Ladywood, Doris Fisher) who gives her talks to Reg Harcourt. The final item is a Len Tingle film report from Cannock Chase looking at the conflict between public access and preservation of the park and funding requirements. We see views of Cannock Chase, including car-parks, the fallow deer, and worn footpaths at Milford Common. Tingle talks to: head park ranger, John Smith; environmental researcher Dr Jo Bostock; David Slee, Staffordshire Countryside Officer; and Councillor Don Mathieson of Staffordshire County Council. We also see library pictures of a fire on Cannock Chase and a ranger driving through the park.
