Programme presented in the studio by Tony Francis. The first film item is a report by Rob Whitehouse in which he joins a group of Walsall Labour supporters travelling by coach to Darlington to campaign in the local by-election. It is a key seat which the Conservatives are hoping to gain. On the coach Whitehouse talks to Brian Powell and Dave Church of the Walsall Labour group and vox pops several other travelling supporters. In Darlington he also talks to Harry Cowans Labour MP for Newcastle Central and we see the Walsall group talking to voters.
Next on film Jon Lander profiles the former Chairman of British Leyland Sir Michael Edwardes. We see library pictures of Edwardes including his arrival at the 1980 Motor Show in a new Mini Metro and the Longbridge trade union convenor Derek Robinson speaking at a rally (Edwardes sacked Robinson). During his years (1977-1982) at BL Edwardes secured Government funding but reduced the workforce by over 90,000. Lander then conducts a lengthy interview with Edwardes about his career and new book.
Next in the studio Tony Francis chairs a debate between the Shadow Sport Minister Denis Howell and Tony Marlow Conservative MP for Northampton North about cricket and South Africa. Howell is strongly in favour of an existing sporting ban with South Africa but Marlow wants to see a lightening of the rules. The next item is a round-up of the latest House of Commons news from Reg Harcourt in the Westminster studio. Finally on film Len Tingle visits Stoke on Trent where work is underway for the 1986 National Garden Festival. He interviews the leader of Stoke City Council, Ron Southern and the festival's director John Hyde. We see work underway to clear the former site of Shelton Steel Works and the exterior of Eturia Hall.
