Programme presented by Tony Francis. Len Tingle reports on film from Nottingham where the Labour controlled Nottinghamshire County Council have been providing peace lessons to local schools. Conservatives on the council are not happy with the move. Tingle visits St Bernadette’s Roman Catholic school at Sneinton Dale where he interviews headmaster Justin Grealey. We see children in the playground, dining hall and taking part in a ‘peace lesson’ where they are seen discussing nuclear weapons. Vox pops with children. Interview with Dennis Pettitt, Labour leader of Nottinghamshire County Council and Michael Spungin, Conservative leader. Spungin talks of a lack of balance and ‘left wing views’.
Next on film Rob Whitehouse reports from Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire where a group of CND protestors have set up a peace camp. We also see film of three men who climbed a water tower at the base which houses American F1-11 aircraft. Interview with spokesman for the protestors, Fred MacLannan and views of an exercise at the base with staff wearing decontamination suits. Back in the studio Tony Francis chairs a debate between CND members Barbara Harrison and Annie Tannicliffe and Sir Neil Marten MP (Conservative, Banbury). They talk about the right to protest (Harrison was recently involved in a protest inside Parliament). The next studio item is Reg Harcourt interviewing Shirley Williams and Cyril Smith of the Liberal SDP Alliance about their future hopes. Both want Roy Jenkins to lead the party.
Finally in the studio Tony Francis talks to the actress Liz Fraser about her politics. After a clip from ‘Carry on Cruising’ she reveals herself to be a Conservative and admits that she could ‘kill’ Ken Livingstone.
