Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. The first film report from Rob Whitehouse looks at the problem of violent rental videos, the so called ‘video nasties’. West Midlands police recently raided two shops in Birmingham but the law on video certification remains unclear with many videos only being on an unofficial blacklist. Whitehouse interviews retailer Les Hemming and vox pops customers who ask for a freedom of choice (including one who has recently enjoyed Zombie Flesh Eaters). Guy Cumberbatch of Aston University has recently shown some of these videos to his students in an experiment to test their anxiety levels. We see stills of one of his tests. Back in the studio Dr Cumberbatch and John Heddle MP (Conservative, Lichfield and Tamworth) discuss the issues surrounding violent videos with Tony Francis.

Next from the Westminster studio Jon Lander runs through the issues listed in the Queen’s speech which is illustrated with stills of MPs. Lander then interviews the writer Simon Hoggart about his new book ‘Back in the House’. This is followed by another studio interview: Reg Harcourt talks to Sir Terrence Beckett, Director General of the CBI who calls for more Government assistance for industry.

Finally on film Jon Lander profiles Nigel Lawson, the Conservative MP for Blaby who is also the Energy Secretary. We see Lawson in his Westminster car, walking into his London office, Thames House and various family stills charting his rise. Lawson is also interviewed about his politics. He is currently engaged in a sell off of North Sea oil assets. We see Lawson visiting Bagworth Colliery in Leicestershire where he is interviewed about uneconomic pits.
