Description

Programme presented by Tony Francis. In the first film item Jon Lander reports from the Conservative party conference in Brighton. We see views of the pier, Brighton Centre and marina in wet weather, delegates arriving and a Union flag flying over the Grand Hotel. Inside the conference we see Patrick Jenkins MP, Secretary of State for Industry speaking. Lander talks to Stephen Dorrell MP for Loughborough and Jim Lester MP for Beeston about current issues and then we see Willie Whitelaw speaking in a debate on law and order. Next, Reg Harcourt interviews a group of delegates whose motions were not called: Val Pulford (Loughborough); Greg Knight (Derby North); Stewart Jones (Stoke on Trent Central); Catherine Bhageerutty (Cannock and Rugeley); and Roger King (The Wrekin).

Back in the studio Lander interviews political sketch writers Michael White (The Guardian) and Andrew Alexander (Daily Mail) about the conference. The next issue discussed is immigration. The right wing Monday Club want to 'repatriate' 100,000 immigrants a year. On film Tony Marlow MP for Northampton North is interviewed about the proposal in which he wants grants to be given even if the people involved were born in the UK. Next on film Len Tingle continues to report on the issue. It is revealed that many black families are indeed leaving the UK due to the recession. He talks to a Caribbean travel agent who says that business is booming. He also meets the Pennant family from Nottingham who arrived in 1962 from the West Indies. Mrs Pennant worked for John Players in the city. Interview with Fritz Pennant who is unemployed and also interviews with other family members. The item ends with an interview with Timothy Raison MP, Home Office Minister who is critical of the Monday Club proposal.

Finally we see library pictures of a recent NHS strike by NUPE members. In the studio Tony Francis interviews Barry Shuttleworth, Regional Secretary of NUPE about the on-going health dispute.
