Programme presented by Tony Francis. On film Jon Lander reports from the Labour Party Conference held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool (Little and Large on main advertising billboard). He interviews MPs Neil Kinnock and Peter Shore about the conference. The big issue this year is the rise of the Labour Militant group. We see Labour leader Michael Foot speaking in a debate and members of Militant handing out leaflets. The leader of the NUM, Arthur Scargill is also interviewed about the conference process. We then see views of the seafront and a Blackpool tram. Lander talks to Roy Mason MP and at a fringe meeting we see Peter Taaffe, the editor of Militant newspaper speaking. Lander also talks to Militant supporter Dave Nellist and the anti-Militant MP for Newcastle under Lyme, John Golding. Back in the studio Lander interviews the Shadow Home Secretary Roy Hattersley about the conference.
The next item is a studio feature in which Francis and Sue Winter read out political quotes illustrated with stills.
Next on film Rob Whitehouse reports about trade unionists who have been offered private health care by their employers. The story is prompted by news that 800 TGWU members at the Bass Charrington owned M&B Brewery (Mitchells and Butlers) at Cape Hill, Smethwich have been offered private health care. Whitehouse talks to the Midlands TGWU leader Brian Madders who is opposed to the perk We see exteriors of the TGWU office in West Bromwich; and exterior and interiors of the M&B brewery and views of a Nuffield Hospital at Edgbaston (including operating theatre). Whitehouse talks to acting matron Ann Sheldon about the types of patients they treat. There are also vox pops with M&B workers and an interview with John Charlton, Chairman of the South Birmingham Health Authority.
Back in the studio Reg Harcourt talks to the Labour MP for Ashfield Frank Haynes and the Conservative MP for Belper Sheila Faith about the health film (Labour plan to abolish private health care). Finally in the studio Sue Winter looks ahead to next week's Conservative Party Conference in an item illustrated with cartoons.
