Description

We see b/w views of a new railway bridge being installed at New Malden in South West London. The shots from 1960 show the bridge being slowly dragged into place as men place steel ball-bearings along a track to guide it into place. Similar views continue as the film switches to colour and we see that one of the railway lines has now been reinstalled.. We then cut to New Brighton where we see the south footbridge at the New Brighton ferry terminal being lifted into place (also 1960) after it had been removed by the Butterley company for overhaul. The final section shows the installation of a new railway bridge over the Trent and Mersey canal at Eturia in Stoke on Trent. The project (c1963) was in conjunction with an extension to Shelton Iron and Steel Works (Shelton Bar). We see bridge girders being lowered into place with a crane and later cross beams being added which will carry the railway.
