After talking about the ragwort in a dry field Buck Allport recites a poem about the earthworm, which warns against using pesticides on the land and working with nature instead. He goes on to talk about the way in which humans have upset the natural balance of nature. In his monologue there is an implicit understanding of 'greenhouse effect' and the need to farm more responsibly and orgaically.
