Michael Edwardes ran British Leyland from 1977 to 1982.
The Edwardes plan announced today proposed the closure of thirteen British Leyland owned plants including the Rover Triumph factory at Canley, the Pressed Steel Fisher body plant at Castle Bromwich and the MG factory in Abingdon. His proposal called for the loss of 25,000 jobs. The workforce were balloted on the plan and voted seven to one in favour. The long term aim of the Edwardes plan was to encourage the government to put money into the company to enable it to modernise and develop the Metro car.
