We hear about Urban Renewal and ‘Envelope Schemes’ where the external fabric of whole streets is refurbished, giving houses a new lease of life, with contributions from Denis Howell MP for Small Heath and Councillor Mohammed Afzel, Chair of Urban Renewal. The film takes a look at how Area Caretaker programmes are organised, what they do, and why they’re successful. Sue Lancaster, Chair of Woodstock Residents Association and Area Caretakers Norman Beckett, George King, Cindy Harris and John Stevens of Task Force talk about the scheme. PC John Podmore, Balsall Heath gives his perspective. We see a bottle bank being emptied, primary school children working in a greenhouse and playing in a playground, and visit an educational farm. Residents sit in a newly created communal garden and give their positive experiences of the scheme. The film goes on to talk about partnerships with the private sector, combining public and private money. We hear contributions from Nick Wigg, former Area Caretaker, now a housing officer for Merseyside Improved Houses, Terry Brunt, General Manager, Neighbourhood Revitalisation Services, Charlie Adams, of The Housing Corporation, Councillor Dick Knowles, Leader of Birmingham City Council, Richard Wood, Regional Manager, Halifax Building Society and Anthony Beaumont-Dark MP for Selly Oak.
