Description

The reel opens with views of crowds in St John's Street in Ashbourne outside the Greenman and Black's Head Royal Hotel awaiting the start of the match. We then see distant views of Sir Stanley Matthew holding up the ball to signal the start of the match followed by closer shots of Matthews as he walks away signing autographs. We then see boarded up shops in the town centre. The film continues with views of the Shrovetide football match underway with crowds and groups of men grappling for the ball including scenes at the closed Ashbourne railway station (the track has been lifted but the platforms are still in place). One sequence shows a small group of men holding the ball in a river and following the water downstream until it becomes deep and one player is hauled onto the bank. The game continues across fields although there are no further shots of the ball.
