Description

Exterior shot of Welbeck Colliery. Paul Whetton, the branch secretary of Bevercotes NUM branch looks back at the strike and concludes that the threat of pit closures and privatisation remains. Gwen Mcleod of Notts Women Against Pit Closures talks about the strike and the post strike within the NUM in Nottinghamshire that has led to the formation of a breakaway union called the UDM. Retired miner Sid Richmond looks back at the strike and in particular how he went out to film police operations and rallies using his 8mm camera to create a record of the strike. Extracts from his films are seen and we also see Sid filming an NUM gala in Mansfield in September 1986. The next section shows video of the NCB chairman Ian MacGregor on a visit to Welbeck Colliery in February 1986. Welbeck NUM members Tony Geddis and Mark Hunter talk about how they have been dismissed from work due to their involvement in the strike and the subsequent campaign to have sacked miners reinstated. We also see a Justice for Mineworkers march in London which took place in March 1986.
