The voice over commentry (mixed with music) provides details on the stages of the manufacture of fishing rods -
We see the bamboo (tonkin) being split, cut and planed down. The resulting thin pieces are then glued together and bound with twine. A Spanish reed is selected for the handle and this is cut to shape by an apprentice using a lathe. Meanwhile another worker accurately cuts the metal ferrules and these are then fitted to the rod by a female worker. Finally the completed rods are stacked and dried ready for use.
