Description

Bob Milward was filmed by Central Lobby in 1985 when he was a striking miner at Florence Colliery in Stoke on Trent. Since the end of the strike he has begun in two year course at Ruskin College in Oxford in politics, economics and industrial relations. We see library pictures of Bob Milward during the strike - night shots on the picket line. He is interviewed about his course, how he is using his experiences in his studies, and he is seen working and meeting a tutor. Views of buildings at the University of Oxford and the entrance to Ruskin College. Another Ruskin tutor is interviewed about the college which has been attended by a number of Labour MPs. There is also an interview with Bob's wife, Sue about her husband being away from home all week (and a library interview during the strike and library shots of Bob collecting the children from school). The item ends with a library interview with Dennis Skinner MP (from a Central Lobby feature on Ruskin College in 1983) who is critical of the teaching he received on a course at Ruskin because it considers politics from all angles including the Conservative point of view.
