Description

The opening section shows the site being prepared with shots of men marking out the field, hammering in posts, marking white lines and workmen climbing up a marquee to secure ropes. After an inter-title ‘The Welbeck team prepare’ we see views inside a large greenhouse at a nursery with flowers being picked and then flowers being delivered to the site by lorry and arranged inside the marquee. This is followed by shots of show rabbits on a table and in cages. A b/w section shows the floral displays being judged by the Tibshelf Floral and Horticultural Society and brief views of home-made cakes also being examined. The b/w section continues with views of the Duke of Devonshire (Andrew Cavendish, the 11th Duke) touring the marquee with show officials and then people sitting down to a meal still inside the marquee whilst a group of women prepare food and tea. The judging continues with further shots of a man grooming a fluffy rabbit and guinea pigs being checked over. Outside the marquee we see straw being laid and visitors arriving (it has been raining). Returning to colour we see the opening ceremony in which the Duke of Devonshire deliverers a speech. The next section shows sports events on the field including a men’s sprint and several cycle races on a waterlogged oval grass track (there are several accidents). A large crowd also watches the St John’s Ambulance carrying away a girl who appears to have fainted, a tug-of-war, men taking part in distance running and further cycle races (some shots are speeded up). The final section shows a funfair including children riding ‘Parkin’s Supersonic Spaceships’, a welk stall, children buying ice lollies from a van and several general views of the site and visitors.
