Description

The film shows the testing and manufacture of industrial switch boxes under chief designer Dr Dennis Hardy at Simplex GE. We see a switch being tested by the firm up to 24,000 amps using a DC motor and an alternator (operated by a pipe smoking technician). A computer is used in the factory and we also see examples of automation, the welding of fabricated components, paint spraying and final assembly.

Simplex were originally part of Tube Investments and were sold to the American General Electric company in 1965. Location of filming is not known although Simplex had interests in Birmingham and Oldbury.
