The interview takes place in an unidentified location, inside a bare room. The reporter, John Wilford, asks about serious the problem of alcoholism in the Vale of Evesham.
The unnamed psychiatrist is seen close-up and replies that alcoholism accounts for about one in three male breakdowns. He says that compared to London and Worcester figures, Evesham is higher.
When asked about the cause, the doctor states that about two thirds of his patients drink cider, which is cheap and strong. Spirits also play a part but whiskey drinkers tend to go to private treatment, not the NHS.
Wilford asks whether it is made worse because cider is so readily available in local pubs. The doctor says that he would ask that the licensing trade should not give credit to people that are known to be alcoholics.
