Views of printing presses rolling, a paper boy delivering newspapers by bike and reporters at work on the Ilkeston Advertiser. The film then cuts between scenes inspired by sections from the local newspaper beginning with a woman holding a new-born baby. This is followed by shots of children playing on the streets of Ilkeston which cuts to scenes from a school play performed by children from Ilkeston Ladywood primary school. A voice over reads text from the newspaper’s review of the performance. Next we see young people in a pub (birthday messages) which cuts to another empty pub where the landlord likes to dress as a cowboy. Over views of young people in the street and the wild west landlord we hear cowboy music and see an article about the landlord. Next a young woman goes for an interview at the Charnos factory (situations vacant) which is followed by views of machinists at work. This is followed by newly weds outside a church on their wedding day and posing for photographs. A tracking shot past a street of terraced houses is followed by a reporter visiting an abandoned row of council houses which were affected by subsidence in 1973. A brief shot of a marching brass band is followed by views of a closed colliery and a female folk singer performing a song about Ilkeston’s mining heritage. Local sport follows with views of whippets being weighed and racing and men ringing pigeons to prepare them for racing. Back at the newspaper we see reporters typing, compositors at work and the presses again rolling. We then see a man recording an edition of the Advertiser’s talking edition for blind people and local people having a sing song in the Rutland Cottage pub. The song ends for a local councillor to read a poem entitled ‘Capitalist Slaves’. The film ends with views of the local cemetery as in memoriam notices are read out.
