Description

Tony Francis continues his look at the problem of rural poaching which began on last week's programme. This time he reports on attempts by the police and gamekeepers to catch the poachers. Their efforts can be hindered by the public who are not very interested and see the theft of animals from rich landowners in a favourable light, although the police are keen to point out that poachers are often involved in other crimes such as burglary. Views of country game shooting. Interview with Inspector John Thornley of Derbyshire police. Interview with coracle maker Eustace Rogers from Ironbridge who talks about the historical image of poachers. Infra-red filming of modern-day poaching (a reconstruction). Interview with game butcher Chick Rushton about the difficulty of identifying illegally caught meat. Views inside his game butcher's shop including pheasants and venison. Game keepers are joining forces with professional trackers to combat poachers in Derbyshire, and we see a meeting of the Country Guard group who offer such a service. Interviews with Donald Palmer of Country Guard and gamekeeper Andrew Wrath. Reconstructions of the group tackling poachers on the Chatsworth estate.

The next report from Susan Marling looks at the work of the St John Ambulance at the annual Henley Regatta on the River Thames. Interview with Mike Yeo and shots of the St John rescue boat.

Finally, Anne Leuchars joins at group of birdwatchers at Whitecross Green Wood on the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire border in search of the illusive nightingale.
