Description

The film is interspersed with "intertitles" written in wet sand. It begins with shots of the camp with the 'chapel' tent in the foreground. We then see boys in the chapel kneeling in prayer, followed by the raising and saluting of the flag.
The boys are next seen preparing and eating breakfast. We then see them carrying out various chores, including washing up, laying out their clothes for inspection and 'sweeping' up with a tree branch.
This is followed by shots of a boy washing under a waterfall. The boys then line up for inspection. We see them being inspected and then relaxing around the camp. Two boys are seen adding up numbers in a notebook.
The following sequence shows boys gathering turf and hauling it up a steep slope in a bucket using ropes and pulleys. It is collected at the top by another boy who takes it down to the edge of the stream.
We next see the boys stretching something - possibly chewing gum - until it is very long and thin; they hold it up whilst one of the boys sucks it into his mouth. This is followed by more shots of boys relaxing and preparing food. We see some boys playing cricket and others peeling potatoes and showing off a rabbit they have skinned and gutted. We also see two boys beating a tea towel in the stream. A blanket covering something on top of a tea chest is whipped off by one of the boys to reveal a 'statue' which sticks its tongue out! As the day draws to a close, we see boys in the chapel singing by candlelight.
We next see some of the boys with a group of Girl Guides and female leaders, one is sewing some pyjamas, some of the boys are washing up.
Intertitle: "Castleton". We see scouts in full uniform with staffs walking along a road (at Mam Tor?). We then see more footage of scouts and leaders preparing food and eating and boys packing their kit bags and washing in large enamel bowls.
"The Cubs". We see younger boys with older females (Guides and adults) in their camp, carrying out basic chores: washing, cleaning shoes, etc. We also see boys swimming in a lake (naked) followed by shots of male and female leaders and the boys eating sandwiches and drinking tea.
"Water Rats". More shorts of boys swimming this time in a lake with steep rocky sides. One boy is seen diving into the water and the film is reversed to make him look as though he is jumping out again backwards. We then see the boys back at camp pushing to get into a tent where they are given fizzy pop and chocolate (Chocolate Crisps and Mars bars).
"Chee Dale". We see the boys starting off on their walk followed by shots of them having a picnic. We also see the boys on their walk, walking along a rocky path and across a stream, and shots of a passing train at the bottom of the valley. We then see them on a train, leaning out of the windows.
"Duty Calls at Home". We see the boys packing their kit bags and taking down tents, followed by footage of them filling sandbags and piling them up in front of a wooden building. The film ends with a shot of four boys seated behind sandcastles.

Notes

In 1946, the 5th Mansfield (St. John Pathfinder) Boy Scouts became the 5th Mansfield Sea Scouts; the troup still exists today. The films were shot by the Rev. Keith B. Frampton, known affectionately as 'Frambo', who took over as leader in 1931 having been appointed vicar of St. John's Church on Broomhill Lane, Mansfield. He continued to film the troup's annual camps even after leaving Mansfield for Farnsfield after the war.
