Description

Intertitles in the form of boys holding up captioned pieces of paper are used throughout. The first is "The Edale Walk". After opening shots of the camp itself, we see the boys walking first up a steep hill path and then down a gentle incline. This is followed by shots of the boys ‘skinny-dipping’ in a stream with lots of small waterfalls. They then dry off and getting dressed again. Afterwards, they are seen gathered around a lady with an enamel jug. She serves some of them with milk whilst others help themselves to milk from a metal bucket. "Hathersage Baths and after". We see the boys lined up for inspection and then see them at Hathersage lido, lying around on the grass in swimming trunks, followed by shots of them swimming and trying to duck one of the leaders under the water. We then see the boys dressed by the poolside and in a tea room. "Second Week Trips:- (1) Buxton". A small group of boys in uniform, a female leader and a Girl Guide, are seen walking under a rocky overhang. There are also shots of the castle, a valley and horses. We also see the group sitting on a five bar gate and at a railway station. This is followed by shots through the train window and of a boy pretending to be scared about going into a tunnel. "(2) Bac Tor (Visitor’s Day)." We see another group of boys and Guides walking in the countryside around Bac Tor and stopping for a picnic. "A First Class Journey." We see two boys on an orienteering exercise, using a map and compass to find clues. We then see them put up their tent for the night. After cooking breakfast over a small fire, they return to the main camp. "Conclusion". We see the boys packing their kit bags and walking or cycling away from the camp. They get on a bus and we see them set off. There are shots of the boys on the bus and of a town (possibly Bolsover) taken through the bus window, followed by a final shot of a boy walking away from the camera with a sign saying "The End" pinned to his back.

Notes

In 1946, the 5th Mansfield (St. John Pathfinder) Boy Scouts became the 5th Mansfield Sea Scouts; the troup still exists today. The films were shot by the Rev. Keith B. Frampton, known affectionately as 'Frambo', who took over as leader in 1931 having been appointed vicar of St. John's Church on Broomhill Lane, Mansfield. He continued to film the troup's annual camps even after leaving Mansfield for Farnsfield after the war.
The film "Castleton 1940: Lose Hill: 5th Mansfield (St John Pathfinder) Boy Scouts" was shot on the same camp
