Description

The film show an ordinary day for the boys of the 5th Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) scouts attending the Losehill Camp at Castleton in Derbyshire. Intertitles in the form of boys holding up captioned pieces of paper are used throughout. The first is "Castleton 1940 Lose Hill Camp 5th Mansfield (St. John’s Pathfinders) Boy Scouts" . There are wide shots of Peveril Castle and Derbyshire hills, and of scout tents in camp. "Rising Time ". We first see boys asleep and then see them emerging from their tents. A fire is lit and a pot of water is put on to boil. "Morning Dip Time". A group of boys, wearing towels, make their way through trees, crossing a narrow bridge and are then seen diving naked into a small pool. "Prayer Time". A boy is seen praying (images are dark) followed by a shot of an alter with a cross and two burning candles and a close up of a prayer book. "Breakfast Time". The boys prepare breakfast; we see them cooking tomatoes and bacon over an open fire. Some are seen eating porridge from bowls and boiled eggs are handed out. "Cleaning Up Time". The boys wash up, pack up their kit for inspection and sweep up the site. "Wash and Bath Time". The boys, wearing loin cloths, are seen washing, both in enamel bowls and by the pool. We also see a scout leader shaving. "Inspection Time". The scouts (again wearing their loin cloths but now with hats and ties) stand to attention outside their tents and are inspected by the leaders. We also see them sitting and standing around. "Lunch Time". The boys and a scout leader sit on the ground eating sandwiches and apples then more shots of washing up. "Spare Time". The boys are seen relaxing around the camp, one chops wood with an axe, another is reading. "Swimming Time". They return to the pool for another swim. "Dinner Time". We see sausages frying in a pan and food being prepared, including shots of a woman rolling balls of dough. "Chapel Time". Candles are lit on the alter and two boys sing a hymn. "Bed Time". The boys fool about for the camera wearing pyjamas and are then seen asleep in their tent.

Notes

In 1946, the 5th Mansfield (St. John Pathfinder) Boy Scouts became the 5th Mansfield Sea Scouts; the troup still exists today. The films were shot by the Rev. Keith B. Frampton, known affectionately as 'Frambo', who took over as leader in 1931 having been appointed vicar of St. John's Church on Broomhill Lane, Mansfield. He continued to film the troup's annual camps even after leaving Mansfield for Farnsfield after the war.
