We see Lionel Hampden and the apprentices travelling along the River Thames in their 1920s motor canoe 'Dunmara'. Hampden interviews A.P. Herbert about the appeal of the river and the various arguments about its source. We see shots of the river and of Seven Springs in Gloucestershire, one of the supposed sources. We then arrive in Oxford where a group of students are seen dressed in Edwardian costumes and Hampden interviews art student Sara Hoskins about a campaign to save the Oxford barges. We see shots of these barges which are moored on the river at Oxford. Next, we see a river pleasure cruiser (one of the Salter's Steamers) and the apprentices interview its captain Walter Mace.
